Books Turned Over to Bulihan Sites and Services Project Elementary School,
Ipil I Silang, Cavite
06 December 2006. Silang, Cavite

Colonel Emeraldo C. Magnaye (2nd from left), Director for Operations of the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing of the Philippine Airce Force (PAF), hands over books donated by READ Philippines to students at Bulihan Elementary School. (From left to right, Major Althony Murata, Colonel Emeraldo C. Magnaye, Brigadier General Oscar H. Rabena (Wing Commander of 250th PAW), Dr. Ederlinda Soberano (Principal of Bulihan Elementary School),
Librarian and selected students of Bulihan Elementary School).
Bulihan Sites and Services Project Elementary School is located in Ipil I, Silang, Cavite, a depressed area inhabited by about 20,000 families relocated from slum areas of Metro Manila. The school, headed by principal Ederlinda Soberana, Ed.D., serves more than 3,000 pupils. Bulihan has 81 teachers and one administrative aide.
Bulihan is a "place of survivors." People from far-flung areas of the Philippines, who moved to Manila hoping to find jobs in the city, found themselves back in a rural setting, as the government had torn down the temporary shelter they had built along esteros, coastlines and railroads. Families at Bulihan Relocation Area have nothing but a few remnants of their homes shredded to pieces after government demolition. Because of the extreme poverty in the area, various social problems exist which have had a negative effect on the academic performance of school children.
The School was adopted by the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing to demonstrate its commitment to investing in the future through High Impact Projects of AFP Units. Col. Magnaye approached MoveOnPhilippines for assistance with books for the school.

READ Philippines, Inc. purchases one diesel generator for Salvacion High School, Palawan
Accomplished November 17, 2006.

Salvacion High School in Barangay Salvacion, Municipality of Basuanga in Palawan has a Peace Corp volunteer who is an IT specialist whose major project is to make the school Internet enabled. One of the biggest challenges to implementing this project is the unreliability of electricity. Barangay Salvacion does not have its own power plant. It relies on another municipality (Coron) which is 54 kilometers away and more heavily populated creating higher demand on power supply. Blackouts are frequent in Salvacion, sometimes for as long as two weeks especially during the rainy season.
Principal Aurelia Panlilio of Salvacion High School requested financial support to purchase a diesel generator to be used during school days when there is no electricity to ensure students can continue with printing projects, overhead projections, copy machines and use of electric fans.
READ Philippines agreed to support the generator project so long as a donor is found and pending receipt of additional information about the school and the generator.
Volunteer Grace Parmelee provided photographs of the school and has agreed to follow-up on the project and conduct a site visit when she travels to Palawan to ensure the generator is secure and is being used for intended purposes.
CPOA of Virginia Beach, a group of volunteers helping READ Philippines, agreed to provide funds in the amount of $500 specifically earmarked for purchase of a generator for Salvacion High School. Funds were received and deposited into READ Philippines' bank account with Wachovia in Jacksonville, FL.
A special projects committee was formed to put together guidelines for special projects program and said committee met on September 29, 2006. After approving the committee's guidelines, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a diesel power generator for Salvacion High School.
Seller Judith Quirit faxed an invoice to READ Philippines indicating she will sell one diesel generator (8HP Kubot 35 KVA) in the amount of $500 and will deliver such generator to Salvacion High School upon payment of $500 to be deposited in a Land Bank account in Coron, Palawan. Funds were transferred to said Land Bank account via money remittance.

- Children
are leaders of tomorrow. Children must be equipped with better education
to help prepare them for the future.

- The country's future success
depends on an educated and well-informed citizenry. Investing in the
education of children is tantamount to ensuring the country's future
success.
- Giving back to the community
is a duty of every citizen. Filipino expatriates who have been blessed
with more must share their blessings with the less fortunate.
The
dividing line between rich and poor in the Philippines today is education.
When Filipino children live in poverty, literacy becomes a critical
link in a chain that can either tie children to a life of poverty or
be used to pull them out of it.
For children living in poverty, every day is filled with challenges
and missed opportunities. READ Philippines believes that education
is the best road to a better life for most of these children. With a
strong educational foundation, children in even the most impoverished
and remote communities have a chance at college, a career, and a ticket
out of poverty.
*****
Poor rural communities in the Philippines are often deprived of a quality
education. Lack of school facilities
and equipment, dilapidated classrooms, poorly prepared teachers, lack
of textbooks and good educational resources or references are negative
factors that hinder children from excelling and overcoming the
challenges of learning and going to school.
